The city of Tashkent (Uzbekistan) hosts the 2022 AKF Senior, Cadet, Junior, U21 & Para-Karate Karate Championships. The new kings and queens of Asian Karate will be crowned at the event to be held from December 16 to 20.

One of the most anticipated events of the season, the AKF Championships gather the best Karate athletes in the continent. Here is all you need to know about the tournament.

WHAT

The 2022 AKF Karate Championships are the biggest Karate event in the continent. The new Asian champions will be crowned at the event.
The event reaches its 18th edition in the Senior categories, the 20th edition in Cadet, Junior, and U21, and the 1st edition in Para-Karate.
It will be the first time that an Asian Para-Karate Championships will be held.
WHERE

The event will take place in Tashkent (Uzbekistan) in the Sports Complex “Uzbekistan”.
A major powerhouse nation of the sport in the continent, Uzbekistan have hosted first-class Karate events over the years, including the Asian Championships in 2019.
The previous edition of the event was held last year in Almaty (Kazakhstan).
WHEN

The tournament is scheduled for December 16 to 20.
The first day of the competition (December 16) will have Cadet Kata and Kumite and Junior Kata categories taking the stage.
U21, Junior Kumite, and Para-Karate divisions will be held on Day 2 (December 17). The opening ceremony will also be held on Saturday.
The anticipated Senior individual competition starts on Day 3 (December 18) with the preliminary rounds.
Teams will take the stage on Day 4 (December 19) together with Senior individual and Team Kumite Bronze medal matches.
The finals of the Senior Individual and Team Kata competitions will be held on Day 5 (December 20).

WHO

Over 700 athletes from 28 countries have registered to participate in the event.
Iran present the largest delegation with 62 athletes, followed by Japan with 61 and Kazakhstan with 60 competitors.
The powerhouse nation of Iran topped the podium of the 2021 edition of the event with 39 medals including 14 golds. Kazakhstan and Japan also registered deserving performances with 32 and 10 medals respectively.
The list of defending champions participating at the event is headed by World Championships runner-up Hikaru Ono of Japan in Female Kata, Thi My Tam Hoang of Vietnam in Female Kumite -55kg, Sarah Alameri of UAE in Female Kumite -61kg, Kayo Someya of Japan in Female Kumite -68kg, Abdallah Hammad of Jordan in Male Kumite -60kg, and Grand Winner Zabiollah Poorshab of Iran in Male Kumite -84kg
HOW

The competition follows a knockout format.
The event comprises 61 categories including Senior, Cadet, Junior, U21 and Para-Karate divisions.
